Safer than heat lamps

Works reasonably well for brooding small batches of chicks, can be adjusted as needed, can get dirty but a shelf liner will help with that. Yes it is a bit expensive but better to spend the money than risk burning down the house or barn.

Great for chicks

BUT, in all honesty, if the company is going to supply a clear cover to protect from poop. Then they should make it a quality shield that will last. The flimsy thin, cracks easy shield will need to be replaced often, and they are pricey.

Great product, but watch chick behavior

Overall, we really like it! Others just need to be aware of the temperature of the room. The instructions state that it is not meant to be in a room below 50F but I would error on the side of 60F. Our chicks are kept in a room in the basement where we usually keep an infrared heating bulb and the temperature remains around 60F but drops at night. After we allowed the Ecoglow brooder to heat up, we placed it inside and removed the heat bulb to observe the behavior. (Chicks are 5 days old). They all huddled under the brooder for 3 hours, never venturing from under it which is unusual for them. They weren't even tempted with treats. So we added our infrared bulb back alongside the brooder so they have access to both. They immediately started behaving normally again and wandering around to get food and water. I personally wouldn't leave them with just the brooder until they are about 1.5-2 weeks of age. The other thing to be aware of is that the top of the brooder (with or without the plastic cover) is really slippery. A couple of our chicks really like to jump, and one hopped on but immediately starting slipping and couldn't keep her footing. Slippery surfaces aren't ideal for chicks, so be aware of that. No others have tried it though. The good is that I hope to get them on a regular night cycle. It is much easier to put this in a brooder than find a way to attach the infrared bulb to something. The legs allow for a variety of heights to be chosen from, and we prefer to put it on a tilt so gives the chicks some wiggle room to find an ideal temperature. It is safer and mimics the chicks being under a mother hen. Great product! As long as you are diligent in tracking the temperature of the room, you will have no issues. EDIT: This advertises it can fit 35 newly hatched chicks. That translates to maybe 10 chicks once they hit 4-5 weeks old. We had 7 chicks and they were able to fit but it was starting to become a tight squeeze when they were 5 weeks. Not too crazy since we started putting them outside around then

Needs a vaulted cover instead of flat cover

Great product. Raised 19 chicks and they loved it. But many would perch on top since it is flat. I have seen other brands with vaulted covers so they can’t perch on top. The cover gets absolutely covered with poop with a couple hours of cleaning, so it’s pretty high maintenance as I like to keep the brooder fairly clean. Maybe save some cardboard boxes next time and cut my own disposable covers.

I have raised lots of chicks in a tub with a heat lamp. I always had worries about temperature and keeping them too hot or too cold. Risk of fire is always a concern, and of course, the electric bills are pretty crazy while you've got the lamp on 24/7. Heat lamps are also unpleasant for chicks. They get bright light 24 hours a day, and they are always exposed. The norm is a loud bunch of chicks doing a lot of stress chirping. This radiant heat source was everything I hoped it would be. I don't worry about fires. I don't worry about keeping the right temperature for the chicks. I don't worry about baking them alive. The chicks like it too. They get to huddle under this heater and feel safe. They are much quieter as a result, because they are content and not constantly stressed out. I really should have bought this long ago. I purchased this heater (bigger than I needed) and started it at 3 inches high at the front end and a bit lower on the back end so that that chicks could pick the amount of contact they wanted. As they grow, it is easy to adjust. A protective plastic cover is easy to clean, since they love to sit on top of it. I have this heater set up in a fully screened pop-up playpen meant for small puppies, and the chicks just couldn't be happier. I did have to teach them how to use it. I know on the videos I have seen the chicks run right under it when they are introduced, but I didn't have this exact experience. My chicks did run in and out underneath it but didn't seem to get it. I had to listen for the stress chirping, and go shove them under there. After a few hours, everyone had gotten the hang of it. Honestly the easiest experience with raising chicks I have ever had.

Does not heat enough for day old chicks

After much research and reviews i decided to purchase this brooder plate for this years chicks. Our first batch purchased was only four and we lost two due to the lack of heat it provided. We purchased a smaller rentacoop brooder plate last year and ended up going to back to it after losing half of the chicks we purchased. We ended up purchasing the larger rentacoop brooder plate with the hopes it does as well as the smaller version. Im glad we only bought four but we have hatchery orders of 8 and 13 in the coming weeks and i would have been highly upset to lose more than i have due to an ineffective product. First time and last

THE Best Brooder

I LOVE this brooder plate! Every chick I've put under it has survived, not always true with lamps. Another thing with lamps: they have to be on, providing light 24/7, in order to produce heat. This messes with the chicks' day/night cycle which they need to grow up healthy and strong. With the Brinsea, they can run up under "mama" at any time. As you see, I have 2 ages of chicks, 3 weeks apart (the older ones are tolerant silkies). The staggered leg height works perfectly for all of them.

Works great, size is an issue though

I ordered the Brinsea EcoGlow 1200, it arrived quickly and works exactly as advertised. I'm glad I read reviews ahead of time as this is supposed to fit 35 chicks and I can't see that happening at all. I had 14 chicks this spring and when all of them went under there wasn't much room left. Definitely wouldn't fit 35 little fluffy butts, even at a day old! I really prefer this style of heater compared to a heat lamp, seems much safer and uses less electricity since you're not heating the entire brooder. The chicks responded well to it, going under to warm up or nap and otherwise being out and about in the brooder, just as they would if they were being raised by their mama. We had no issues with over- or under-heating. One thing I do question, though, is why the price has jumped $50 since I purchased on March 6, 2020 for $125.33. The price now (May 3, 2020) sits at $173.62. This is an outrageous change in less than two months' time and I would absolutely NOT repurchase through Amazon unless there is a correction in the price.

Works and safe

I have 2 of these now, they keep my chicks happy. I like that it can be set up on a tilt and the birds can figure out their sweet spot. Also helps when you have a mix of different sized birds. The plastic is very easy to clean (especially with the cover) and it never gets hot so I'm not worried about it becoming a fire hazard. People say they're a bit small compared to what they are claimed to be good for. I currently have 24 (3-4 week) birds using 2 and it's plenty of space for them. Once they get a decent amount of feathers they don't push into the warmest spots anyway. The room is a constant 19-20C.

It's a little expensive but it will save on electric so over time it's a saving. It's very safe and the birds like it. I cant imagine getting a smaller one though... It won't support 30 chicks until off heat age... 30 day olds are maxing out for space... 20 it would be more suited to. Tried using with quail but does not throw enough heat, had to turn the lamp back on. I do think this is too expensive for what it is. It’s certainY a safer option as definitely less of a fire risk but I wouldn’t recommend relying on this to keep chicks warm enough. After I purchased another different brand heat plate I now realise my brinsea plate was not getting as warm as it should and now it's past its warranty so I can't get a replacement. I DO NOT recommend this heat plate.

So far so good

Easy to use, a lot nicer to have a way of keeping the chicks warm with out having a light on them all day/night. The plastic cover is defiantly a great idea to keep the top clean once the chicks start moving around and pooping everywhere. I would defiantly recommend, even though its a bit pricey it has worked great so far.

Not as warm as other brands

Size is fantastic, but I think it comes at a cost. This warming plate is 12 degrees cooler than the titan brand I borrowed from a friend. I’d rather buy two of them and make sure my chicks are warm enough!
