It worked!
I ordered this item and then let it sit around for a month or so because I knew the job was going to be a pain, and I was afraid that something else was wrong rather than the element. My wife finally pushed me to do the job, so Here's what I learned. Another reviewer correctly pointed out that this does not come with attached retainer mounting brackets. On my original burner, the brackets are screwed into the burner frame. I did not get a warm fuzzy contemplating drilling into an almost $200 part. But, the replacement came with a metal disk the same size as the replacement burner frame. I suppose it has something to do with reflecting heat, but that's just a guess since the original burner didn't have one. I felt a little bit better about drilling holes into the disk, so I attached the retainer mounting brackets to that. It took a little doing, but I was able to line everything up. I mounted the disk onto the springs, and then sat the replacement burner on the disk. Most of the wiring is already attached to the burner, so wiring was straight forward. Since the replacement burner is on springs, it will be pressing against the glass top when that is replaced, and the burner isn't going anywhere. It took two or three tries to move the burner slightly on the disk so that it was centered on the glass top, but once I had it right, I was done. And it worked! The only other thing I will mention is that I didn't use the super-expensive tape that is supposed to go around the perimeter of the glass top. I'm sure there's a good reason for it, but I told myself I'd do it later, and it is working so good as it is that I'm thinking that later may never come. Anyhow, I took away one star for the retainer mounting bracket.

Works great, old brackets were no problem.
I really appreciate that GE supplies parts for 10+ year old appliances. Install and calibration both went great. Other reviews mention that you have to move the old brackets over but it's not at all a big deal. The old and new parts both have pre-punched and numbered holes. All it takes is a 1/4" nut driver to unscrew the self-tapping screws and put them in the matching holes on the new part, no drilling necessary. The aluminum disk is for calibration after you get everything back together, NOT for mounting.

Cooks my food
So far the element is working as it should. This is the second time in 16years that I've had to replace it. Time will tell if this one lasts. Much cheaper than getting it from factory.

GE OEM factory part
It is not hard to install, but it does take some work. Other reviews are correct that the support bracket is not included. I suppose this part fits various models using different bracketing system. But taking out the bracket from the old element to install to the new one is not hard, the holes are pre-drilled.

It's good to have my burner back again
We had some trouble ordering (our fault, not yours) because the first time we got this item my husband said it was too big. After a couple of tries, I sent for this one again and insisted he take the old element out to compare. It's good to have my burner back again.

this fact makes a relatively easy job quite difficult
BEWARE! These replacement elements DO NOT come with retainer-mounting brackets that allow installation of the element onto the spring loaded pins that hold the element in place. You have to remove the old brackets from the element you are replacing and reattach to the new elements by drilling your own holes. CAUTION: it is extremely difficult to line up the brackets to the existing pin locations, and thus difficult to align the burner so it fits exactly into the burner circles on the range top. I have replaced many elements in many stoves, this fact makes a relatively easy job quite difficult.
