Best for small batch use.

First of all this is adorable sitting in my kitchen. I mostly use it to crush small seeds like cardamom for cooking with. Its quite tiny and does not hold much. It does work but you kinda have to tilt it and use the edges to crush. It’s my fault I didn’t look closely enough at the dimensions. If you have small amounts to crush then this is perfect. But if you want to do more than maybe a teaspoon its too small. It depends on your needs. But I definitely enjoy seeing it sit out because of how adorable it is.

Cast Iron + Excellent Design = A Lifetime of Use

I purchased this to supplement a large granite mortar and pestle. The granite is so large and heavy that it’s awkward to drag it out and then clean it, especially for small tasks. This mostly gets used to crush fresh garlic. It’s small but has excellent weight. The pour spout is a really nice feature. Even though this product arrived pre-seasoned, before I use any cast iron, I season it with a round of Crisco. I’ve had no issues with rust at all. If it does rust, I’ll clean it with vinegar and season it again. It’s not a big deal. Unless I drop it on tile or concrete, I expect it to last as long as I do. I’m extremely happy with this purchase.

It will smash glass to powder!

I thought it would be bigger - but then doesn't everyone concerning everything? It will make frit and that's it's job..... It will break glass!

HEFTY

This little molcajete is great. It's a solid little thing and works well. Fits in the palm of your hand nicely. The cast iron texture helps grind things well. I use it for my dogs joint supplements because he refuses to eat the tablets whole. I'm now able to grind them up in to a fine powder to put over his food. It's been a lifesaver.

Clean before using

I scrubbed mine a bit witha gentle wire brush and used the pestle to grind off any bits left over from manufacturing. Grinds things very fine.

This is cast iron... It takes some work to get it right

There were some complaints about this in comments but they seemed like they were manageable so I ordered anyway. This is cast iron that has been "pre-seasoned" at the manufacturing level. This means that it has coatings to keep it from rusting etc. This is common as without the factory "seasoning", this would most likely have shown up to me rusted. In my experience these coatings are less durable than actual hand seasoning. Indeed, if you take this out of the box and use it without cleaning it (definitely not recommended), the seasoning will flake off with use. I used steel wool and some scouring cleanser to get most of it off. Once I did that i was able to season it properly with kitchen oils and an oven. This process is common for most cast iron kitchen wares so I didn't find it a problem. I also spent some time grinding the pestle to remove some of the seams that I wanted to smooth out. All in all, yes I think the shape could be better and I did have to put in the work to properly season it, but to me, that seems realistic for this item and the materials its made of. I love working with it, its very functional and it looks amazing in my kitchen.

The last mortar and pestle you’ll ever need!

This mortar and pestle meets all of my expectations! It is the perfect addition for all the cooks, witches, and herbalists out there. I have mine on display in my home and had several friends and family members ask me where I got it! I love how sturdy/well-weighted, the size of it, and that there is a small dip on the side for easy pouring. I especially like how deep the mortar is compared to others out there, as well as how nicely the pestle fits in my hand making the process of grinding herbs so much more comfortable and easy. I would highly recommend this product as it is well worth it and the fact that it is cast iron means it will last forever!

It’s gorgeous…I love it

Easy to clean, hefty and with a deep narrowing bowl so that the mortar and pestle does the work. Will probably order another one so that I have one for food and one dedicated for soap and incense making ingredients, as cast iron is porous. Very happy with this purchase.

Lovely!

Just as I'd hoped. For the folks here complaining about rust, that's what cast iron does if there is moisture left on it. Simply scrub it with steel wool and dish soap, COMPLETELY dry it, and season it with oil in the oven (find a youtube video). Pretty bad casting marks on the pestle, but it functions just fine regardless. Can't beat the price.
