So convenient! Sounds great, VERY bright, finicky setup.
I'll start with the unboxing. Packed well, decent instructions - but no adapter to connect it to the traditional light socket. I've replaced all our can lights with retrofit LED's - every single one came with an adapter. So I had or order one - nobody carries the Juno brand and I was worried that what I ordered would not fit. I ordered a five pack of "Rextin Medium Edison E26 Socket adapter" for $15. I was planning on doing some splicing if needbe, but the connectors were compatible and connected right to the light. A two day delay, but it was installed. Next was the typical smart device install - installing an app, creating an account, switching WiFi networks. If you've installed other Alexa compatible devices, you know the drill.. The app - at this time it has under 100 installs. The permissions it required were worrysome. Access to modify my phone's firmware, IMSI and permission to make calls? I did some quick checking to make sure it was a legit all. Unless you give permission to all that, you can't install the app - or their equipment. So I gave permission. Then I had to create the account. It refused to take my password and kept giving me the same "Not enough characters. Must have one lower case....." generic message. I had all that. The problem? I had symbols - a $ and a *. Finally figured it out and deleted those. Sloppy programming. Then it took a few tries to get the speaker to log into my network. Third time was the charm. Part of the process also involved logging into Amazon and giving the device access to my account. Again, made me nervous, but I did it. They really need to handle the entire registration process better - these steps alone will turn off many people. Part of the process was also being sent a verification email. Yep - it went into spam because the sending e-mail server did not match the header info. Again, sloppy. But after all this was done it's up and running. In my Android Phone's Alexa app it shows up as an Alexa device. It controls any other Alexa device, acts as a speaker and mic, etc. - in other word's a full-fledged Alexa. Music sounds great even at full volume and the light is amazingly bright. The speaker shows up as an Alexa. The light as a Juno light. I expected to see an Alexa, speaker and light, but this makes sense. I can control the light with any other Alexa in the house. The speaker has no EQ controls in the app or via voice command - that's a bummer. I also can't control the volume in the Alexa phone app, but can with voice commands. If you're streaming music and say "Alexa..." the music pauses then restarts - unlike most devices where the music volume decreases. Since this is a bulb, the light switch will be turned off, either intentionally or by mistake. When turned on again it takes this device about 15 seconds to re-establish a WiFi connection. Instructions are minimal, but it really is common sense. Mount is via those large spring clips. Physical install took about two minutes. Software setup about 20 minutes. Photos: Installed with blue ring lights on (waiting for a command after I said "Alexa..."), adapter I needed to purchase, in the box, the rear of the unit.

Compact, cool, pricey.
So, recessed ligniting isn’t known to be flashy or new in any way. Yet, Juno Lighting thought of a way to make it cool again by adding an Alexa capability and dimmable multi-color lighting. This particular version even is the result of collaboration with JBL for adding a speaker. For me, that sounded cool enough to try even if the only place we currently have 6” (recessed) down lights is in pairs. Combining tow of the Alexa hubs makes no sense, and the second would be an Alexa enabled version that also saves some money. I did not have that option right away so see if that also results in stereo capability. Anyway, Installation is rather simple as it’s designed to be a retrofit of existing 6” cans. The necessary adapter for a plug-n-play installation, however, was not included due to some California law reference. The adapters can be bough separately, or you choose the version that has one included. Make sure that if there is a wall switch it cannot be a dimmer switch and needs to be “permanently” set to “on” or bypassed. A smart device like this needs “permanent” power to be supplied and a bathroom fan I recently reviewed had a great solution which is unfortunately not available for the Juno. Namely that’s a remote in the form of a wall switch that’s wireless but permanently installed. I really like the concept as lost remotes are of no concern. Also, the smart part of using a smartphone isn’t always convenient or useful. The Alexa module does elevate that with voice control, but not everyone prefers that or wants to invite Alexa (or Siri etc. for that matter) to be constantly listening. Anyway, several reviews described the hassles of getting the Juno set up and while the app really isn’t the most intuitive and the setup took a few attempts, it ended up being somewhere in the realm of normal to slightly worse setup woes. As a family, the voice assistant is the only realistic way to interact with the speaker and that isn’t always met wit enthusiasm (especially on each end of the age spectrum).

Took some patience
I'm going to start with the not so great... The app it requires to set it up. The instructions weren't great, and it took more time than I feel like it should. I also didn't like all the permissions it wanted. Luckily I have a separate email address that I use for things like that, and an unused phone that these random apps get installed on. Once I battled the the set up, I found that I really like this light. It works great with my Alexa, so great in fact that it responds to my African Grey parrot, and I haven't had any issues with it disconnecting. I love that I can adjust the brightness through the Alexa, too. One of my favorite things about it is that I no longer have to have the speaker device sitting on my counter. The Juno light has a great speaker for listening to my music, is always quick to respond, and does double duty. I have it in place of the light over my kitchen sink, and the only issue I ever have is when my children will flip the wrong light switch and turn it off.
