Another reviewer mentioned that this will not index horizontally, that is somewhat correct but somewhat not correct. Once the drain is actually closed and water is in the tub or open and empty it will indeed index horizontally but there is some play because of the drain release mechanism design has slack and the weight of the water is part of what keeps it closed. This is not a new design but a rather old one that this is normal with. If you want it horizontal once closed, simply turn it back to horizontal. Previous issues with this may from people who have never used an older style drain like this. The actual quality of the piece is great though and so is the finish. If you want to spend $35 on a trap then DON'T buy this! Go to HomeDepot or Lowe's and buy the cheapest PVC setup they have. If you are buying a cheap steel or fiberglass tub then those would be a perfect match! If you are fine with replacing a tub/trap in a few years or you are a contractor looking to shave costs or you are flipping a property and want look over function/longevity to maximize return then this product is not for you. If you want something that is a bit higher quality with materials that will last then this product is great. Pair this with a cast iron tub and you won't be replacing this in your lifetime like you will with a fiberglass/PVC combo or steel/PVC combo. It is all about what you want out of your purchase.

Stylish but pricey

Remodeled the bathroom with a new Kohler Villager cast iron tub. This is one of the matching tub drains. The plumbing store showroom where we bought the tub suggested a $20 PVC tub drain (and didn't stock this)...perhaps I should have listened, but I do like the design of this unit. Exposed finish is excellent, but beware the machined brass components--they are VERY sharp. In addition, fit is difficult, though some of that could be placement of the drain line in the house. * the horizontal run from tub drain to the overflow riser is a bit short. this necessitated moving the tub about 1/2" closer to the wall than normal * the outlet into the house drain line was a bit long, requiring cutting (no we did not switch parts!) * interface between the overflow on the tub and the overflow riser was touch--easy to dislodge until final installation Summary: hit one star for value, hit another star for difficulties in fit

Parts you see are good, nothing else met expectations for the price.

First off, once installed on the tub it does look and function nice. It has a nice feel to it. On opening the package, the brass drain pipes were all corroded (green) and pitted. I had to shine them up so they would seal. The instructions were absolutely horrible. They clearly had not been validated by the writer. Illustrations did not show proper orientation of components, the text was actually backwards from actual requirements, and they missed a step about a pipe needing to be cut to actually fit into the tee. At the end of the day I figured it out, but only after realizing the instructions were wrong. It took way longer than it should have. Between the instructions and the condition of the pieces, you'd think I bought this for $20 at a garage sale. Thankfully all of the other Kohler pieces I bought for this remodel didn't reflect this horrible quality.

Fits but costs more

We had to buy this more expensive drain for our new Kohler Bellwether tub (which is a new design for Kohler) because the cheaper, universal Kohler drain didn't fit. Beware if Kohler recommends a particular part number (found on spec sheets on Kohler's website) you should buy it.

Kohler Clearflo Pop-up Drain

Okay, but could be better. Everything is a bit sloppy and fits poorly. The pop-up is a poor fit and the top control is loose and cannot be made to index horizontally when the plug is closed. I used to think Kohler was the tops, but this and some other fittings I have bought recently, made me change my mind. Moen is probably better for faucets etc. and Toto for fixtures.

Tub Boot

Most of the tub boots you find at the store are cheap and look it. I pulled an 80-year-old tub out and the old tub boot was still holding up, so why change things - right? So I stuck with brass and copper to replace parts and they will last another 80 years....longer than I'll live. And, it looks great!
