Not disappointed but definitely needed cleaning
You should always wash new containers and this one is no exception. As with many reviewers, I was trying to decide between this and the 40 oz Kleen Kanteen. Pricing is more consistent with the Kleen Kanteen but when the Nalgene was actually a dollar less I decided to go with this one. I'm glad I read several reviews that described the metallic smell and the interior weld seam. A little sandpaper fixed the seam and a lot of vinegar fixed the smell. And I mean a LOT. It's not the metal itself that's causing the taste/smell but the oils and deposits left over from manufacturing. A food grade acid, such as vinegar, can get in there and clean it out but you'll have to use more than you'd think. Just bite the bullet and fill up the container at least halfway with white vinegar. You can dilute it a little but I'd keep it fairly concentrated. Keep the bottle next to you throughout the day and keep shaking it and flipping it upside down every so often. The good part about the Nalgene is that it can stand on it's cap - not super sturdy but well enough to get that vinegar everywhere inside. Keep the vinegar in there all day, or at least several hours. Wash it again with a good bottle brush and dish soap and you should be good to go. If you're not satisfied with the results try it a second time. I do not recommend any industrial solvents - stick with food grade vinegar! So yes, one star off for having to sand down the weld seam. Although mine didn't look too bad. I still feel better about cleaning it up.

Excellent Water Bottle in Just the Right Size...
The reason that most folks carry a "heavy" steel water bottle while in the outdoors is in consideration of the environment. But, not necessarily just because we want to keep pollution down. No, it is often because we know that the environment we will be venturing into is often extreme, and durability is key to survival. We understand that Murphy's Law is alive and well in the outdoors and we need every advantage possible. Lets face it, plastic bottle are great until you drop your pack onto a large rock or stumble and fall onto it and it comes our looking like that Dixie Cup Matt Hooper crushed in Jaws to impress Quint... They just aren't durable enough to truly depend on in unpredictable and wild places. The stainless steel used in this bottle is excellent. It is of a substantial thickness and durability without being excessively heavy. The wide mouth opening is convenient and makes the bottle easy to fill. That all being said, over the past year I've noticed how most folks, and manufacturers for that matter, are turning to either 38 oz. or 40 oz. bottles. While that may be a good choice for those out there who just want to carry more water; I find that this decision really doesn't make sense and is somewhat shortsighted. Now before you go off on a rant, please allow me to explain... To me the idea of increasing the size of a steel bottle by so little volume (about 1 cup) is senseless because it accomplishes nothing in terms of significantly improving one's hydration and just increases that weight of the bottle. Furthermore, given the expanded use of large capacity hydration systems in packs and other collapsible water carrying alternatives like a Platypus bag, etc., there are much lighter and more efficient ways of increasing the volume of water you can carry with you. Therefore, the only really valid reasons to carry a steel water bottle is 1) in the eventuality that you find yourself in a survival situation or 2) you know that you will be obtaining water in the wild. In both of these cases, you will have to find a means of purifying the water. This brings me to another reason why a 38 oz. plus bottle is a poor choice. Namely, most water purification tablets and methods are based on a 1 quart (32 oz.) volume. Simply put, that means if you fill a 40 oz. bottle with water from a stream and drop in 32 oz.s worth of purification tabs, your really not getting all the purification you thought you were. Sure you can break up additional tablets and guesstimate how much more to add, but isn't that all a rather silly pursuit? All your doing is going through your limited supply of tablets faster then necessary and let's face it, the extra juice just isn't worth the squeeze. That's why I say that this bottle is just the right size, 32 oz. With it there is no need for concocting vague and wasteful purification potions. In the end, I see it there is one significant plus side to everyone's fascination with plus size water bottles. The greater the demand for those steel behemoths, the cheaper these practical bottles become. So keep on demanding those big heavy Papa Bear bottles for $25 each, and I'll keep snatching up these Goldilocks bottles for half that. Thanks and have a great hike...

Keeps taste of previous drinks
Bought this because I wanted a stainless steel bottle that can hold a lot of water. Sometimes I use it for tea or hot chocolate, but when I drink water with it again, I can taste my previous drinks a bit. The wire is long enough that it makes the lid touch the surface when unscrewed, so I tied a knot. I think I’m lucky because mine didn’t have any rough welding.

The fish mouth spreader seems to lock the bottle neck in place making it easy to prevent spillage over the fire
Dear Readers; Tip Your hats to Liberty Mountain for sending me my first (and not last) Nalgene Standard 38oz. Stainless Steel water Bottle! They sent it to me at a time when i was having a hard time finding THIS PARTICULAR 38oz. SIZE. Readers, please be aware to: Check the Nalgene website first to get the CORRECT MODEL NUMBER BEFORE ORDERING! I read many reviews of customers who were very disappointed and received the wrong size! MY REVIEW: What convinced me to purchase the Nalgene Standard 38OZ. Stainless Steel Bottle; was that the Nalgene had a reinforced thick wide bottle neck to allow you to safely remove the Nalgene Bottle from the campfire using a fish mouth spreader tongs. The fish mouth spreader seems to lock the bottle neck in place making it easy to prevent spillage over the fire. The Nalgene Standard 38OZ. Stainless Steel Bottle fitted my CONDOR water bottle pouch like a glove. You can be able to store some small emergency items or food bars in it for quick access. The Nalgene Standard 38OZ. Stainless Steel Bottle top; Although; I do like the Unique Ergonomic Lanyard Paracord loop design on the High Balistic Plastic bottle cap. I have to research further; to replace this Plastic Bottle cap.I would have preferred a Nalgene Standard 38OZ. Stainless Steel Bottle Cap; that also has a Stainless Steel cable loop instead of a Paracord loop The Paracord loop on the Bottle cap feature is a great idea if you are not going to use the Nalgene to boil water in your camp fire. If you do use this Nalgene in the campfire consider buying some !/8' Bungie Shock cord from PARACORD PLANET to replace the used cap loop cord. I was watching a video where the pack water bottle holder was too small for his Nalgene Bottle. The bottle kept falling out. to prevent this; I would suggest to attach a Nite-Ize #3 "S"BINER to the Nalgene cap loops and pack to safely secure the bottle to your back pack. This is a great compact quality product that I would buy again! Sincerely; Tony Tirado

Almost Foolproof
This is a great bottle, easy to clean since its wide opening, can be exposed directly to the fire to boil water and it is quite solid. Except I managed to break it, it must have fallen straight on a rock or something (no throwing or excessive foolery) and a small fissure appeared; completely unnoticable unless you drink at a very specific angle. nonetheless I recommend this product and will probably buy another one if the fissure becomes more of a problem , I also recommend to be a tad careful and not assume its indestructible

Tough, leakproof, versatile
This bottle slips easily into the side pocket of most packs, stands up to a lot of use and abuse, and does what it's supposed to do. In a pinch with a bit of faff it can also be used to boil water over a stove or fire. It's not the cheapest, lightest or cleverest, but it won't let you down.

Switched from KleanKanteen
I recently forgot my old KleanKanteen (40oz) in a plane, and thought very thoroughly about getting the same one again. I was certain I would want a non-insulated (due to size), stainless steel, >1L bottle. On most fronts both bottles perform very similarly. In the end, I decided to go for this one, for the following reasons: - Lid-shape: I like the flat top of the Nalgene, it makes the whole bottle a bit more compact than the KleanKanteen - Lid Options: As this bottle has the Guyot threads I can buy e.g. a aftermarket sports cap for easier drinking when on the go / driving (even Camelbak Lids fit). The KleanKanteen did not have this option. - Lip: The metal lip of the bottle adds extra versatility for camping. Using e.g. parachord I could get water from a creek and cook things over the fire with more ease. What is also notable is that it is higher than in the KleanKanteen, which means that when you are driving and drinking (water, of course...), spills are less likely. - Another plus is that the Nalgene lid is much easier to take off, so now I don't break my hand trying to get to my water anymore. Leakage has been nonexistant, though that has also never been a problem with the KleanKanteen. - This bottle, while a tiny bit heavier than the KleanKanteen 40oz, feels more sturdy. I hope this will result in less dents. Now to some of the negatives: - The KleanKanteen used better quality plastic for its lid - this one feels a little cheaper. Also, the cord with which the Nalgene lid is attached to the bottle gets in the way when closing the bottle. This is not a big issue, and will just take some getting used to. FYI: the listing incorrectly describes this bottle as having 1L capacity. I measured and it is more like 1.1L when filled to the top. I also want to comment on the fact that another reviewer mentions a weld inside the bottle, but there is no weld. These stainless steel bottles are pressed into shape, not welded... (same with KleanKanteen and this one). All in all, I am very happy I chose the Nalgene 38oz bottle, and hope that it will serve me well for years to come. Update: Been using it for a few months now, and the bottle is still going strong, and I am still happy I chose this over the KleanKanteen.

Love it
Great for hiking, can use over a hot stove to heat up water… no rust or scaling. Good overall.

Good product, 1 flaw
It's a well built bottle, clearly a lot of thought has gone into the ergonomic design. But I gave mine away in favour of the Pathfinder 32oz bottles for 1 reason: the inside/underside of the cap is plastic here, but theirs is metallic - a metal inside of the cap reduces plastic on water contact - a major benefit of having a metallic bottle in the first place. There will always be a "food grade" silicon seal around the cap which may come into contact with the water, but other than that, Pathfinder's bottle is all metal on water, where as this Nalgene is metal until the water splashes up into the cap or is turned upside down etc.
