Works
This electric fence tester works, but it is hard to see the lights in certain lighting conditions. A much better way to test if the electric fence is energized vs touching the fence.

Works Great!
These are very hard to read, but if you cup your hand around the lights, you can see it flashing. This is so much better than the digital one I had before that gave false readings.

If you like to mod stuff, it's a good buy, otherwise, avoid it.
If you're the kind of person who is happy to modify their own tools, you can make this a decent device for a good price in less than five minutes. If you're not a modder, I'd avoid purchasing this. This is a very simple analog device and should last a long time. It's basically just a series of neon bulbs and resistors connected to the leads. No batteries, no chips, nothing you wouldn't find in a device from the 60s. I consider that a plus. On the other hand, the case plastic and interior is the exact same color that the neon bulbs glow, making them very difficult to see in full daylight. I opened mine up and painted the interior surfaces black, and now it's much easier to read. If you are not comfortable doing that, there is another, similar analog tester listed here on Amazon with a black case. Now with that one, you'll probably want to paint the outside bright orange unless you want to loose it in the weeds. :)

Not Worth It
1. The product instructions do not explain how to read the lights. Are they supposed to blink, or stay on? One light, or all of them? 2. The lights are very dim and difficult to read in bright ambient conditions. 3. It only measures voltage up to 7,000. Did anyone at Zareba remember that their fence chargers go up to 11,000V?

It’s not hard to read
Many reviews here made it seem like this was unusable because the lights were hard to see. I had no problem in direct sunlight during the summer. Just put your hand over the thing for some shade and you can see it fine. Cables are a good length and not too cheaply build. It’s a dead simple device, so not much else to say.

Works, but.......
I did the paint it black trick as suggested; while I could barely read the unit in the daylight with partial shade, it was still necessary to further shade the unit with a piece or cardboard or whatever to clearly read the display. In my case, all lights blinked, but a review of questions asked indicates that it's ok. I assume I then have 7000 volts (or more) running through the system. I can recommend this item for casual users like myself, with only 250' of fencing (six wires on it). I'd go nuts if I felt obligated to use this on a daily basis like ranchers with miles of fence might.

Lights can't be seen in daylight.
Works fine in los light situations.

Thought I needed this
While it was informative to read the voltage on your line, the clicking sound of the electric fence controller tells you all you need to know.

Not Useful
I don’t know about anyone else but I’m not out doing fence repair at night. The display is impossible to see in daylight. Some people say cover it with your hand or whatever but seriously. I’d return it but already threw out the packaging. Get yourself a volt meter from the hardware store that has an actual meter you can see.

Very hard to read the scale
I find the scale you read to determine if the fence is charged is impossible to read in the bright sun.

As advertised
The variable display led's make tests more helpful in poor light conditions. It is also small enough to conveniently fit in a pocket while tending the fence,

Works Well
I like this meter but the one thing that I wish would be better is the intensity of the lights. Hard to read in sunlight.
