UPDATED REVIEW: Changed from 4 stars to 1 star...if only this thing was as good as Bosch's customer service.
UPDATE: I've recently encountered issues with this sander that has changed my outlook on it in a major way. Below, between the lines, is the original review, and I'll post the latest info at the bottom. -------------------------- So, when asking on a forum about what to get to replace my old Porter Cable Random Orbit Sander, a lot of people suggested one from Bosch. I have a belt sander by them, and it works great, so I thought I'd try this one out. To start with, I'll say that many people suggested their next one up from this one (in the $100-200 range), but since I'm a hobbyist and I like to be frugal, I tried this one out despite a few negative reviews (more on this below). I initially had some problems with the sanding pad, and it took a few weeks to get it resolved, so I'll talk about that first. When it came, the first thing I did was check the flatness of the sanding pad, as that seemed to be a fairly common complaint among the lower scored reviews on here. I was disappointed to see that it was somewhat cupped when placing a straightedge to it (see pics). Although I also got a soft interface pad for polishing up finishes (in conjunction with Micro Mesh disks), this cupping did make a big difference when just using the backing pad on the sander without the interface pad. It left a ring, and although moving it around helped even out the sanding action, sometimes you have to focus on a smaller spot and can't move it quite as much. The cupping and resulting flared edges of the pad made the sander start to dig into the surface more than I'd like for this type of sander, and this was on the finest setting (6)! Needless to say, I contacted Bosch. The representative was VERY prompt and helpful, especially considering I got it around the holidays of 2017. They sent out a replacement pad free of charge, and when I got it, I tested it with a straightedge like before. This one was cupped as well (see pics). This time, I didn't hesitate to send a picture with it and ask if this was somehow a normal thing for these pads. The same rep responded and sent it to some people in a different department. They checked some of the pads and the representative got back to me saying that they found some other of the same pads that were cupped, and they sent out a different but equally usable pad for this sander and confirmed with me that it was flat. When I got the new pad, I checked it and it was definitely flatter than the first two, but still had a slight cup at spots. When I put it on the sander, though, unlike the pad that was already on there when I first got it, this new pad was perfectly flat when screwed onto the sander, so that problem was solved (once again, see pics). I tested for the reverse effect on the pad the sander came with when I took it off the sander, and it was more cupped at that point. Anyway, Bosch's customer service gets a big thumbs up from me! The sander now leaves a nice even surface with seemingly no swirl or scratch marks. I've only tried it with 220 and 320 grit paper as well as with the fine Micro Mesh disks (1500 to 12000 grit), but I'm sure it will do fine with pre-finishing grits as well. I've only tried it for significant periods of time on the two finest settings (5 and 6), so I might have to update the review if I do try the lower ones. Just a couple of minor gripes beyond having to wait a few weeks total for the pad problem to get resolved...some of the negative reviews also said that this sander was hard to control. I do notice that if I apply even a little bit of downward pressure, it starts to erratically move about the surface. When I just let the weight and sanding action of the sander do the job, this lessens up to a more than manageable amount at worst. Also, the dust collection chamber is a bit finicky to get off. It does stay secure, but this proves to be a bit of a hassle when getting it off. You have to rotate it back and forth slightly while pulling to get it off. Bottom line, if you're a hobbyist like myself and time is not of the essence, this sander is a solid one. However, as much as the product works well and Bosch's customer service (at least for me) was top notch, the quality control on the pads seems spotty at best, and that could prove to be an issue if you're a professional and depend on the product being perfect right when you get it. In that case, I'd recommend going with one of Bosch's more expensive ones. And if a Bosch rep read this, please tighten the standards for the standard sanding pads on this sander. ------------------------------- UPDATED INFO: In the past few days, I noticed the sander was running WAY too quickly at no-load speed and when I put it on a surface, it spins WAY too slowly and leaves tiny swirl marks on the surface similar to what you'd get with a sheet sander. I read in the owner's manual that it's the dampener ring that is failing if this happens, so that's one thing. Also, when I put the sanding pad back on after cleaning the underside of the dampening ring (to no avail), I noticed the pad was now cupped kinda like the previous ones I mentioned earlier in this review (see newest picture). Here's the thing...my old Porter Cable sander went for YEARS without having these issues, and that one came with my router for FREE! I've only had this one for just over two months, used it decently for one month of that, and then encountered these issues. I e-mailed Bosch and they offered to have me ship it back to them (they'd pay for it), and while I told them I'd be glad to send it back for purposes of them inspecting and learning from the issues present with the sander, I said I'm no longer interested in it. Not sure if mine's just a dud or what, but I'm honestly VERY shocked at how short lived this thing's performance was. When asking about maybe getting some credit towards one of their better ones, Bosch said it'd be dependent on where I bought my next sander from (due to the decision being left to the manager of that place), so now I might be out $70 or so because the quality control is so poor on this sander. I take back what I said before...it's good to be frugal, but sometimes if you try too hard it can leave you in a worse place than if you had just spent a bit more up front. I DO NOT, under any circumstances, recommend this sander. Again, maybe mine was just a dud, but it's not a very good first impression of this sander, and I will not try it out again. Be careful about buying lower-priced stuff, even if it's from a reputable brand such as Bosch!

Connect a Dust Collector
I like everything about this orbital sander except for the built in dust collector. It is easy to use and does a good job. However, the little dust collection unit leaves a lot to be desired. While it did collect some dust, the work area was still covered in dust. I recommend you attach a shop vac or some other powered dust collector if you plan to do a lot of sanding. Other tha that, this is a very good unit.

I liked this sander
I enjoyed using this Bosch sander. It was very easy to use and did an excellent job. It was considerably better than the one I used to use.

Best sander ever for the money.
I had no problems with the sander, and it operated flawlessly!

Great sander!
I love this thing. It isn't very loud (don't need to use earplugs) and has good power without vibrating too much. The dust collector works very well. I can sand in my garage with my truck in there and it doesn't result in my truck getting completely dusted....as long as I empty the dust collector regularly. Great purchase, I highly recommend this sander.

Good for the money
It is. It the high end 300$ sander, keep in mind, but it is doing very well, the dust collection is very good, just remember keep it clean, powerful and can quick remove the material, comfort to use

Excellent at capturing dust….
I recently had the misfortune of having many of my tools stolen. One of my more recent purchases was a 5 in random orbit sander from a leading black and yellow brand. I found that to be an excellent and very effective sander. I chose to replace it with this Bosch sander because I have been very impressed with the quality of their tools and was curious how they would compare. This Bosch sander was a bit of a let down when it comes to controllability, ergonomics, and effectiveness of the sanding. While still an excellent sander, I feel like my old one was a better tool. The only area I would say the Bosch is better in, is Dust Collection. This sander makes very little mess, it collects its dust very well, with or without being attached to a vacuum. I would say that overall, I am happy with the Bosch, the quality seems to be excellent, and it does the job, just not as well as my last sander, but it does create far less of a mess, and that might be a big selling point for some buyers.

Great little sander.
Great little sander. The dust collection is amazing.

Smooth and relatively quiet
I attached this to my shop vac and sanded drywall with 90% of the dust being sucked up. I particularly liked the included attachment for the dust collection. Dewalt does make a similar product however you have to purchase the dust collection adapter separately and it becomes awkward to use. The hook and loop sandpaper was easy to put on and take off. Compared to Black and Decker where you have to apply significant effort to remove the old sand paper. This also comes with a soft or hard carrying case. I opted for the hard case which was $5 compared to the approx. $70 for a Dewalt hard case. Overall it’s a phenomenal product for its price point.

Good if you can get a non-defective one
Not worth the time or money. I purchased this prior to Christmas when the price was right and after having read reviews on amazon.com. This is where my journey began. I put the sander to some use sanding some pine with 120 grit (Bosch) sandpaper. It seemed to work okay, but I noticed swirl marks in the wood and with barely any pressure the motor almost seemed to stall (speed setting 4) at times. I looked at the sanding pad and only the exterior of the pad was doing any sanding. After holding up a straight edge to the bottom of the sander I found out why. The pad had a large cup in it. Pushing harder on the sander made no difference. I contacted amazon and they promptly sent a replacement. When I received the second sander I checked out the bottom. It too had a cup, but less so. After sanding with it for a little while the motor did not have the same problems as the first. This one maintained had noticeably more power (comparing same speed setting) and maintained its speed, but had a unusual sound to it like a bearing was bad. At this point I didn't want to fool around trying to get replacements from amazon. Fed up I went to my nearest Lowes which carried the same model sander and checked the bottom. All orbital sanders on the shelf had a flat bottom except the Bosch. What good is a 5" sander if you only use a very small portion of the pad? You end up with uneven pad wear and swirl marks in the wood. Not to mention all the problems they seem to have with the motor. My advice is to put your money to a different orbital sander. The second sander will be going back to. Pros: - dust collection was excellent - comfortable grip - variable speed - quality cord - nice case Cons: - underpowered - high defect rate - dust canister can be hard to open and close - case is overly bulky Edit (15/1/2015): I called Bosch as was recommended by the Lowes HW employee who said their customer service is great. I was immediately connected with a person who confirmed cupping of the pad was not normal. I didn't ask about any of the other issues as I'll just hold onto the unit with the better motor (I've still got the 2 right now). He's sending a new pad as a "good will gesture" which hopefully resolves the problem. I'm going to hold onto the a unit until then so I can test out the new pad before making my final decision. Amazon customer service is also superb as usual. I spoke over the chat, as my preference is to speak with someone regarding the issue, and they were quick to issue a return slip. I feel bad returning things to Amazon due to the shipping (which is why I went to Lowes to compare sanders), so hopefully this new pad solves the problem and I don't have to return the second sander. Edit (20/1/2015): I received the replacement pad and it's cupped worse than the others. I called Bosch again and they said they're aware of the problems but are unable to guarantee I receive the correct one. Because I'm in Canada the pad comes from the warehouse in Canada. She could only guarantee a non-defective pad if it came from their main warehouse in the US. She's having another one sent in hopes that it corrects the problem. Edit (23/1/2015): I received the second replacement pad and this one is actually flat. The part number is the same as the others but the construction is noticeably different. The foam is quite a bit softer and the velcro also seems different/more grabby. With the new pad the sander sands more evenly. I'm keeping the sander as it appears to be the best in its price range (when you get a non-defective one) and I can't justify spending another $150+ for a professional grade one.

Buyer beware
Sander was problematic right from the beginning. It ran, but not well. I read a couple of reviews I should have heeded, about failure rates, and have majorly regretted buying a Bosch. Unfortunately I did not deal with the problem till 31 days, one day past Bosch return window so had to take it to a local shop for repair. It took 30 days to get it repaired! Bosch on policy about shipping a minimum number of parts caused the delay. Tried to get customer service to deal with it. They were useless. I will not buy a Bosch tool again.

Smoooooooth and no dust with my duct taped vac hose.
The ROS20VSC sander is head and shoulders above any other palm or ROS I've ever used. Dust extraction is excellent even with the snap on container (although the paper filter gets clogged pretty quick). My unit arrived in a sealed box missing the VAC002 adapter that is supposed to be included. Contacted BOSCH customer service and they will send me one, up to four weeks. I could have done a refund and repurchase through Amazon but that would involve packing up the unit and taking it to a CP outlet etc not to mention the environmental consideration. MacGyvered in the meantime.

Easy one handed dust free operation
I bought this to prep my paint surfaces on an old car and wow, I'm quite happy with it. I had been using an air powered sander, this is much better. The built in vacuum keeps dust levels way down, the variable speed control gives me what I need. I've gone through a lot of velcro sanding disks but they're cheap. I'm glad I got this, it really helped me finish the job. If someone took it, I'd buy another one.
