Replacement for Speakman Sentinel Mark II, Lots of Plastic, Amazon Amazing

To replace the leaking insides and dated outsides of a Speakman Sentinel Mark II (Sentinel Mark 2), took a chance and purchased this valve and trim plate. In short, it has worked so far, but the insides are not an identical replacement. The trim plate is plastic although the main lever is metal. For the price I expect more metal. All-in-all, as long as this lasts as long as the unit from the late 60's or early 70's then I would give it 4 stars. The long version: Recently purchased a house that was built in the mid 60's, and had a leaking Speakman valve. The access point behind the fixture was insufficient to plumb a new valve and breaking away tile from the shower wall wasn't a pleasant option. Read on Speakman's site that the innards are the same design, but there were no detailed schematics of how the new valves sat inside the brass housing. The obsessive image comparison of this valve compared with the old, seemed to line up to roughly the same design and measurements. When taking the old valve out of the wall, the gearing to open and close the hot/cold valves broke, and the O-ring around the front and back of the valve had deteriorated from lack of use. More cost effective to buy a whole new item. After seeing the 60s/70s and new unit side by side I can say that they do fit together are the same in the more important regards, but one, the sealing rings on the back side of the new hot and cold valves are round, the old valve had rounded rectangular valve seats. Filled the recessed rectangles in the old brass housing with plumbers paste just to be sure, but it turns out, the circular valves are just slightly smaller in diameter than the squares, so they sealed well enough. Another small but important difference, the anti-scald top lever is not the same mechanism in the new valve as the old valve. As a result they don't line up perfectly, but there's a bit of play in the connector, which is still the same flattened (keyed) stem. This unit did require some additional tile work to instal. Unlike it's older counterpart, the SM-1400-P thankfully comes with a large round plastic gasket that has a bit of foam rubber on either side to mate the trim to the wall without leaks. Still going to seal it with some caulk due to tile grout seams. There is a plastic guide/template included in the trim packaging to get the hole size and orientation in the wall correct. This valve works well, and the trim feels solid despite being thick plastic. The anti-scald lever on the top seems like a gimmick that will forever be set at high-noon, but the old part had it so I wanted to stay consistent. If plumbing this in a new area, the updated brass housing has built-in shut off twists that are accessible from the front if the trim plate is off. A great function for new installs. The old valves didn't come with such a feature. Other superficial criticisms: Most bathroom fittings and pipes are chrome and shiny, stick with that theme unless you already have brushed nickel. The plastic trim on this brushed nickel item shows finger prints. This is annoying since none of my appliances exhibit this behavior, although none of them are wet on a regular basis either. Doesn't appear to be any way to get the Speakman logo to line up as in the photo, it's just slightly off level despite lining up the stem gasket as described. Odd that the company name is on the lever that rotates, insuring that when the unit is on, the name has to be read at an angle. Very nit-picky, sure but struck me as a design opportunity. Maybe the pipes aren't exactly level, in my old house. This fixture's fun temperature images are well placed if the shower egress is from the left, but imagine entering the shower from the right and wanting to turn the water on to warm it up before stepping in. The lever will at least partially obstruct the view of the temperature setting. The Sentinel Mark II was oriented the other direction. Amazon amazing: This part was broken, and leaking, with no shut off valves to speak of, so the water needed to be shut off in the house. Ordered the replacement part with Prime 2-day shipping. There was a mix up with the carrier and the package ended up bouncing between Tennessee and Illinois. Unwilling to wait 8 days for the part to maybe arrive, Amazon sent a different unit via next day air. Ultimately took 4 days to arrive, and phone conversations with two different Amazon representatives but they made it right. This company is incredible. With such a small profit margin they do right by their customers every time. Amazon should get five stars for this alone, but this is a product review, not a company review.

Exact fit

Used it to replace what i already had. Old one handle was gettin hard to turn. Exact replacement easy install

Nice unit, by the same valve and trim separately to save money.

First off, when I went to order this unit Amazon raised the price by $75 over the prior day with their variable pricing. Not cool. The unit itself is well constructed and appears to be of high quality. The valve is brass but the actual trim is a high grade plastic although you can't tell by looking at it. The handle appears to be metal but the back plate is definitely plastic. If you are interested in this make sure to buy the parts separately as that saves over $100 at the time of this writing. From Speakman customer service: The SM-1400-P is the complete unit which includes the CPT-1400-P (trim) and the CPV-P-DV (diverter valve). I returned this complete unit and just bought the separate parts. I am rating this unit as "ok" based on my initial impressions and the fact that the trim isn't all metal.

Just ok

It's fine for a pressure balance valve. It seems to top out at around 5gpm, less if you have it on a hotter setting. That takes a while to fill up a tub. I would suggest looking at a thermostatic valve.

Wasn't able to use

I bought this to replace in an existing shower. I didn't fit I emailed the company. They never responded. I was late as I had trouble finding a plumber but they should have answered me email. Don't buy unless sure it will fit.

The item I received did not work as advertised and didn't look anything like this valve. I returned the item but the seller would not ship another valve.
