Replaced my old spark plug boot

Versatile Small Plug Wire Boot

This was a good buy for a Sten replacement part. The description didnt really get into sizes of high tension coil wire it fit, but everything else is good. It's a small spark plug boot with plug spring to repair broken spark throwing boots after wearing out the original from use or rubber rot. It's made for small equipment like blowers & small weedwhackers. The hole on the tension wire size is smaller then I expected, but the quality of the Sten boots rubber was such that I was able to slowly drill with a speed bit, to fit my small McCulloch chainsaw high tension to plug wire. The rubber will easily drill out, but still tight on the bit you choose. Not to worry, after you size it, put a bit of dielectric grease on it and snapple it on till the wire protrudes out the spark plug end. Attach the plug spring to the end of the wire, push the wire back in until the plug spring or plug terminals in the boot and you'll have a nice good quality boot. I noticed, and it wasnt hard to see, that the OEM boot was thinner & more of a plastic boot that was given to tear sooner or later. I ripped mine taking the plug in and out testing for spark and otherwise, there was no wear on the boot, just a cheap choice of use on McCulloch's part. I drilled mine up over 5mm and reccomend you do this slowly cutting out the rubber, because otherwise it gets very hot! Now that I know you can do this, I highly recommend this boot replacement for power tools up to 25cc or up to 38cc equipped coil wire repairs if your willing to drill out the end. Measure your plug wire with a pair of calipers in mm before buying this unless your not willing to modify or just want direct replacement. Theres plenty of rubber to work with, just be cautious of heat while drilling and don't run your bit in so far that you drill thru the head of the boot. I enclosed a picture of a hex wrench measuring 6.5mm snuggly fit into the newly drilled boot to show that it really works and the rubber has the elasticity to stretch for a good dirt & moisture free seal to the wire. Too small.

I ordered 7mm. These were 5mm. I heated a 7mm rod with torch and melted/enlarged the hole.

No instructions on how to install the spring that comes with the boot

Anyway watched a video on YouTube about the boot and how the spring is installed just i never buil 2 stroke coil up before. It appears to be easy.

Beware

Bought these about a year ago to replace the ones on my JD D170 and after a year of use about 4 mowings they were both cracked badly. Not Amazon fault just bad product. Won’t buy again.

Just what I needed

Went to change the spark plug on my weed whacker and the whole thing came off the wire, trailing a thin copper wire behind it. I thought I surely had messed it up, but it turns out this happens all the time. The coil wire which carries the high voltage is simply cut off at the factory and a metal spring is pushed through the rubber cover. Apparently if that wire is in the neighborhood, there's ample voltage to fire the plug. So, with this kit, you slide the boot onto the wire, insert the bent end of the wire into, the coil wire, and then carefully pull the boot over the joined wires. The five minutes it took to install it and the low cost of the part, sure beat taking it into the small engine mechanic to fix it.
