This Thing Does Everything Except My Dishes

I'm a novice when it comes to using multimeters, but I have a beautiful 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Supercharged NASCAR 40th Anniversary Limited Edition car that I want to learn how to maintain on my own. This multimeter helped me to determine that I didn't have a parasitic draw/drain, that my alternator is still going strong and that the battery I had was simply a bad one. I've since replaced the battery and not once has she lost power! I'm looking forward to learning more about the meter, and understanding what all the symbols mean. I bought the pro version, which was the best decision I think. It has charts inside the user's manual that tells you what the different symbols mean, what they measure, and how to interpret the reading. It pretty much does everything.

Leads suck. But overall it is a good basic meter.

Leads are less than easy to use due to the short contacts. Put a old set of fluke leads and works as it should.

The product did not meet my expectations in full

The multimeter is OK but I was disappointed to find that in the Diode test setting, I DO NOT get a beep when testing diodes. This would have been a useful feature that is there in other similar multimeters.

Good first impression - need to use it more

I mulled over the purchase of this digital multimeter (DMM) for several months. I needed a full-function meter, as my current one does not measure current (Fluke 101). My research prompted me to read many reviews and check the company's online presence. It turns out Etekcity manufactures all kinds of electrical and electronic goods for the consumer market. At any rate, I decided to "pull the trigger" and order the Etekcity DMM; the price was right and I still have the Fluke to fall back on for all basic applications other than current measurement. I was very pleased and impressed with the packaging: It is minimal but well protected. The user manual is a bit sparse but well written, if not a bit awkwardly, by a non-native English writer. Nonetheless, the manual is completely functional. Bottom line: The product looks good, well made and easy to use and grasp in my hands. The fit and finish is top rate. The probes also seem to be of good quality. I can't comment too much more as I have not made a measurement yet, but I have powered it on (it does ship with batteries installed) and checked the backlight function. I look forward to this serving me well for my home prototyping needs. It may find some professional use, but this DMM is best suited for the hobbyist/student user - in which it should perform well. Very bottom line: This DMM is a great value!

Fantastic as a classroom set, for small hands, and for beginners.

I create classes for teaching kids electronics. I originally purchased one of these to try out and ended up keeping it for myself after procuring a class set (about 20) of these. They are fantastic for the price, durable, and easy to use. They are priced low enough that if a kid manages to break one by accident, we're only out $18 instead of a $120 unit fluke tried to sell us. I still have my nice $120 digital multimeter which I use for high precision work, but for my day to day workhorse, I carry one of these in my bag, in my car's toolbox, in the home toolbox, and my desk drawer at work. I know there have been some issues with fuses (others have noted) and I have not encountered this yet. The fuses do not have to be 100% the same, a few mm's difference is not going to prevent it from seating properly. Just make sure the rating is similar enough (find a fuse with a lower amp rating rather than higher). I will update the review when/if I encounter that issue and will give some instruction on where to source the fuses.
