Great product with minor setbacks.

The retractable line is thicker and has caught on many things so far without breaking or effecting the ability to retract. That being said, the plastic bit at the end busted already and I replaced it with something else. Expect to replace that piece every couple of months.

Most compelling recommendation - I bought it again!

I bought my first Key-Bak in 2012 and it lasted until this week, Multiple extensions every day at work for badging in and out. When the cord finally frayed and snapped, I bought another the very same day to replace it. 10 yrs for $8 is a hell of a deal compared to the cheapo ones that break every month.

Great if you wear a belt (probably)

Almost everything with this item is perfect. The cord appears to be made of a very durable material that could possibly be used as a bow string in a pinch.* The retracting mechanism is strong enough to hold a janitors key-ring without hitting the weight limit.* The hard-shell could probably withstand being run over by a small car.* The Achilles heel of this product is the clip that holds it to your pants. The clip stays on tight if you're wearing jeans. When you wear dress pants or chinos however, the clip is not tight enough to stay on. Sometimes just putting my hand in my pocket and taking it back out will result in my key-card falling on the ground. As I was writing this review I realized I wear fitted clothes/pants and I do not usually wear a belt. If you wear a belt with your pants, this item will probably work for you. If you don't wear a belt I would suggest the carabiner version. Amazing badge holder

Great product!

Very well built. Not just an "ID Badge Holder"- I'm currently using to hold 6 keys and so far, so good. It retracts with ease and there's no sag. Belt clip is quite strong too, which keeps the keychain/id badge holder in place quite firmly.

Built like a tank

This reel has enough OOMPH to carry at least 10 keys and ID cards, maybe even more. I attached two entire rings of small keys with no problem. It didn't stop those keys from jingling like it was Christmas, but it certainly kept them secure and ready for action. The construction is high quality metal and after several months of light use, I saw no noticeable decline in retractive force. This thing is in a class of its own when compared to those cheap plastic ID card reels with nylon string. The 360 degree swivel on the belt clip is also a big plus and no doubt helps extend the lifetime of the polyester cord. The only downside to this reel is that it's a little bigger than what might be deemed fashionable. Still, though, it's not as large as you'd expect. Overall, a good investment if you're looking for something to keep your keys secure.

USA quality

My honest option about this little guy... I work in the IT industry and have a badge that unlocks doors. I had previously been using cheap retractable reels that kept wearing right through the nylon string. I wanted something that would last as I've had to replace them frequently and didn't want my badge to fall off or get lost. This reel has a strong cord with a strong reel to zip back your light weight attachments. It also has a strong metal clip that keeps it secured on my leather belt. I have also had no issues with the snap that secures my badge to the cord. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a good reel for your badge or a few keys. This is high quality American-made.

Stands Up to Daily Use - 18 Months So Far

Eighteen months ago I bought this to replace the crummy Chinese retracting badge holder that my company provided and I'm delighted. I selected this model because I keep my badge in a leather holder that proved too heavy for other badge retractors. I chose the version with a belt clip and badge holder and in the 400-ish days I've worn it, it's never accidentally fallen off my belt nor failed to completely retract my badge. I've probably extended it more than 2,000 times and the cord shows only the slightest wear. If this thing ever wears out, I'll gladly buy another.

The rotating belt clip is a terrible design

I decided to give this item a try regardless of the warnings I've read about the belt clip. Sadly it is all true: the whole thing easily unclips from your belt/waist when you pull the string. The clip tension is weak (gets undone super easily) and the fact that it rotates too doesn't help. I am considering returning this item.

Detaches too easily

If used on a card reader that's at waist level or higher, the clip flies off the waist of the pants. Might work okay if it's attached to a belt loop but otherwise it's too annoying. I think the fact that it swivels makes it more likely to pop off.
