Sturdier than the prior model, just be careful with the bottom!

I have the prior model, which is an oval shape. With the prior model, you unscrew the top part (the chopper) and dump the nuts from the bottom container - which is sealed. I like that feature. The drawback with the oval model is that the top tends to come loose while cranking the handle, which is really annoying. I basically have to keep tightening the chopper part while I'm using it. The new model, which is a square shape, has solved the issue of the chopper coming loose during use - which I like a lot. The thing you have to be careful with is the bottom - I haven't had a problem with it coming loose while chopping, but I've discovered it's best to turn it upside-down before removing the bottom to dump the nuts into your mixing bowl. I tried holding the chopper over my bowl and gently popping the bottom open - about 1/4 of the nuts spilled onto the counter.

Good for certain nuts…

This chopper worked great on walnuts ( for Banana Bread) and peanuts for dessert garnish, but would not “chop” almonds easily, even in coarse grind. I will keep it as I am 85% satisfied. It does save time and effort on the above mentioned walnuts and peanuts. YAY!

Husband is pleased

My blind husband uses this to grind Brazil nuts. The previous hand grinder pinched his fingers when he turned the handle, but this one is perfect for him. He is very pleased!!

Much Better

Way better than the previous 'round' container version which allowed chips of clear plastic to be dropped in the chopped nuts. This square version is much sturdier. The only issue keeping it from 5 stars is the way you have to open the compartment with the chopped nuts... from the bottom. I'd recommend this unit none the less.

Does the job

I debated a long time before buying this. My primary need is for chopping raw almonds. I've been doing that with a chef's night and wooden cutting board. I'm reasonably good at it, and am able to pretty much contain the almonds so that it's rare for one to go flying. However it's still a hassle. I ended up debating between either buying this unit or a mezsalune knife and bowl. The advantage of the mezzaluna is that I could also have used it for cutting salad ingredients. However a good mezzaluna knife and bowl would have cost a lot more than this chopper, so I finally decided to try it. I wasn't sure it would work out well, but I've owned it over two months and have been using it once or twice a week on almonds, and so far I fairly satisfied. It's not perfect, but it seems to do the job. As other reviewers have noted, it's tough to turn when it's full of almonds. I've found the best way to deal with that is that when the handle stops turning, I simply reverse direction. In theory, turning the handle counter-clockwise will produce more coarsely chopped nuts than turning the handle clockwise, but I've found the difference to be so slight that it's negligible. I could see so little difference that I finally did a test to see whether there really was a difference. I filled the nut chopper with almonds twice. The first time, I rotated the handle clockwise to get a fine chop and dumped the chopped nuts into a container. I then did the same test but rotating the handle counter clockwise to get a course chop. I poured the chopped nuts into a container that was identical to the first container except that I'd marked the bottom to identify it as the course chop. With my eyes closed, I moved the two containers around so I couldn't tell which one contained the coarsely chopped nuts. When I compared then, the nuts in both containers were chopped almost identically. The coarsely chopped nuts were slightly larger, but it was so close that it really doesn't matter much, at least for my purposes, which is adding them to my morning oatmeal. The slight difference might be more important for people with different needs or preferences. As for the chopper itself, the quality seems decent. I have no idea how long the plastic will last or how long the metal grinders will remain sharp enough to do the job. For now, however, it's exactly what I needed.

Oval vs square. Which is better...

I bought the oval and the square model this month. I ground the some almonds from a larege bag. They both ground them about the same size. The oval was easier to crank and grind them, empty out, and clean. They're both great and I like both of them. I consider the oval model to be the best choice. It's the one I would recommend others.

This Works Well for Softer Nut Types BUT Difficult to Use With Almonds

It is mostly plastic, except for blades and part of the handle. I would imagine it would work great for softer type of nuts, but we do a lot of almonds and you can only put a very few in at a time and with great difficulty does it chop them up. You have to slowly work the handle back and forth. It is nearly impossible to turn the handle around and around to chop almonds, but I chop them with a difficult half turn back and forth. As I said, if you want this for softer type nuts, it should work great, but not if you do a lot of almonds or the harder type of nuts like almonds.

Great Product!

I'm on a new healthier eating plan, and a lot of the breakfasts + desserts require chopped nuts. It can be very time consuming to chop specific types of nuts for the recipes, this device saves so much time and is very easy to use (clockwise for a finer pieces and anticlockwise for slightly larger pieces). I love this product and wish I had found it sooner...would certainly recommend.
